Recovering from Computer Viruses
In recent years more and more of us have started to buy our own PCs. With the popularity of the internet and with improvements in technology advancing many
people are enjoying the benefit of having IT facilities at home. Just as we maintain our cars it makes sense to maintain our computers to make sure we are gaining the best results from our systems. Viruses pose a major threat to PCs and cost individuals and businesses millions of pounds each year in damages. To help you protect your PC we have compiled a brief guide on how to keep your computer safe and secure from viruses.
How Viruses Work
It goes without saying that the introduction of the internet has brought innumerable benefits to society. Unfortunately the internet is also the cause of many of the main problems for our PCs.
Many viruses reach peoples systems by e-mail as they can easily be concealed in attachments. Viruses are designed by hackers with varying levels of severity for different purposes. In online communities there is a degree of status and competitiveness as hackers strive to create more destructive and exploitive viruses.
The effects of viruses can differ largely. Some may manipulate or destroy data on your PC (this could apply to simple files such as photos and documents ranging to crucial program files and operating systems). In extreme circumstances some viruses may surrender complete control of your PC to the virus's creator. Some viruses remain dormant and stay inactive until they reach a key date which is predetermined by the hacker. If you don't have any anti-virus software installed these viruses will remain dormant until their date is reached.
Anti-Virus Software
Anti-virus software packages are available to buy from electronics retailers or to download online. Some sites may offer free trials as well. Anti-virus software can be altered to suit your personal preferences. Default settings will usually trigger the anti-virus software to scan your computer on a regular basis to reveal any dormant viruses.
Anti virus software will also perform scans on new attachments being opened on your system as a default setting. This is recommended to help keep your system virus free.
For your anti virus software to remain effective you will need to update it on a regular basis. As anti-virus companies are working to tackle current viruses hackers are creating new ones. In order for your software to provide good support you will need to keep updating it.
Make sure you choose an established anti-virus package. If you are unsure which to pick ask staff in electronic shops or consult review services and forums online. If you buy anti virus software from a company without a solid reputation you may be running a risk. If the software company goes into liquidation at a later date then the software will become obsolete without further upgrades.
With a little judgement and experience of browsing the web you should learn how to recognise trusted sources for downloads. If in doubt make sure to scan any questionable attachments before opening them as it will save you time and effort in the long run.
